Template painting goes back a long way. There are examples of template painting in mediaeval churches. This was a frequently used technique for decorating the walls in dwellings in the 18th century, and in the 19th century in particular. The pattern varied throughout the country. In Hälsingland in particular, the patterns were bold and the colours were strong.
