Color scheme during the 1920´s
In the 1920´s, classicism became popular once again. However, the new style were very simplified and did not have the elaborate decorations that previous eras had. The goal is now for a cleaner and softer aesthetic with influences from 100-year-old Swedish empire. The 1920´s were a very strong design decade for Sweden, the specific style is internationally called "Swedish grace", thanks to it´s elegance. Patterned wallpapers, wooden mouldings, dark-stained furniture and textiles follow a dull color scheme, which creates a calm typical for the decade!
Interior
Room
During the 1920´s wallpapers primary have geometric patterns in a combination of lines, circles and stylized flowers. Darker colors on a beige bottom were common. New patterns for the time were ornaments on a single-colored background, preferably a calm green shade. The wallpapers are often designed by well-known Swedish artists and architects. The white ceiling paint is drawn 20-30 cm down on the wall where the wallpaper started. A wooden strip or wallpaper border usually covered the joint.
Woodwork
The panelling painted in a brown-beige color, grain-painted or off-white were still common but began to be perceived as outdated. Slowly the higher panneling got replaced to lower, narrower floor trims with a simple profile. In expensive apartments and villas it was not uncommon for the ceilings to be divided into symmetrical wooden mouldings . Doors and trims were often painted in a dark brown-beige, or dull green color. Towards the end of the decade, lighter woodwork in off-white becomes more common.
Floor
The wooden floors which were made of pine or spruce, were either varnished or covered with linoleum floors. Common patterns were the printed parquet imitations and floral patterns. In the living rooms, parquet floors with oak bars in varying dimensions are laid.
